Define boat cleaning and compare quotes
Cleaning can cover cabins and upholstery, deck and cockpit or growth on the underwater hull. Material, size and access influence the method. Quotes should cover the same areas and extras, with work carried out at a suitable location.
Define the requested areas
Specify the interior, exterior, underwater hull or several areas. Polishing, recoating and repairs are additional tasks. Cosmetic cleaning is not automatically recognised cleaning for a waterway transfer. Have those jobs listed separately.
| Area | Clarify |
|---|---|
| Cabin and upholstery | Materials, stains, odour and desired scope |
| Deck and exterior | Surfaces and cleaning or additional care |
| Underwater hull | Access, growth and existing coating |
Describe surfaces and the desired result
Wood, gelcoat, metal, plastic and textiles need different treatment. Identify known materials, sensitive areas and previous coatings. The provider should assess appropriate products and methods. Cleaning does not repair damage; complete stain or odour removal cannot be promised before inspection.
Size and contamination determine the work
Model, known length and beam, and selected areas help the estimate. Describe routine dirt, heavy deposits or long storage. For several boats, allocate dimensions, materials and condition to each in one description, rather than assuming identical size and contamination.
Clarify the worksite, lifting and transport
A boat at a berth, ashore or on a trailer offers different working conditions. Underwater work is not possible from every jetty. Clarify lifting, a suitable wash area, transport and key handover. A launching ramp is not automatically an authorised washing place.
Control wastewater and residues
Wash water and removed residues must not enter the waterway or soil uncontrolled. The method and facilities should suit that requirement. Have oily liquids, removed growth and coating residues assessed separately. A biodegradable label does not authorise direct discharge into a lake.
Check waterway transfers separately
A waterway transfer can involve local reporting, cleaning and clearance requirements. Clarify the destination and responsible authority before transport. If recognised cleaning with evidence is needed, the provider must be authorised to perform it. Ordinary cabin cleaning or a quote is not launching clearance.
Compare and accept the complete service
Compare areas, methods, products, surface care and residue handling. Distinguish person-hours from team-hours and check travel, VAT, lifting and transport. Advertised hourly rates do not establish a general total price. Agree assessment, extra-work approval and a review of cleaned areas.
- Prepare the enquiry. Give the boat, dimensions, areas, materials, condition and current location.
- Agree the work. Clarify suitable facilities, logistics, records and extras.
- Check the result. Review the areas together and document remaining damage separately.

Frequently asked questions
Is antifouling included in boat cleaning?
Not automatically. Cleaning, growth removal and coating work must be agreed separately.
Can the boat be cleaned at its berth?
It depends on the work and local facilities. Clarify access, method and wastewater control; underwater hull work may require lifting.
Will cleaning remove every stain?
That cannot be guaranteed before assessing material and condition. Permanent discolouration or damage may need different treatment.
Can biodegradable cleaner enter the lake?
The label alone does not allow it. The provider must choose appropriate methods, local compliance and wastewater handling.
Is ordinary cleaning enough for a waterway transfer?
Not necessarily. Separately check current local reporting and cleaning requirements and any recognised evidence required.
Which costs should I compare?
Include products, care, labour basis, travel, VAT, lifting, transport and disposal alongside cleaning. Compare equivalent scopes.
