Hiring an access platform: reach, access and complete costs

Working height alone does not determine the right platform. The work area must also be reachable sideways, and the machine must suit access and ground conditions. Describing the task helps more than choosing a model too early. Compare machine hire, transport and operation as separate services.

Hire with or without an operator

This is temporary equipment that raises people to a working area. A vehicle workshop lift, fixed wheelchair platform lift or van tail lift is a different device.

State whether you need the machine alone or an operator as well. An operator does not automatically undertake all painting, cleaning or installation work. Requested assistance and the actual trade work need explicit boundaries.

You do not need to know the platform type for the first enquiry. Describe the task and known conditions. The firm clarifies the model, equipment and availability for your period.

Consider working height and horizontal reach together

Working height and platform height are different technical figures. Give the known height of the area to work on and its position on the building or installation. Final selection is checked for the actual machine.

Horizontal reach may be needed over a canopy, hedge or other obstacle. A vertically rising platform does not automatically solve that access problem. Describe known distances and obstacles together.

Maximum working height, reach and basket load are not freely interchangeable capacities. The firm checks the machine’s working envelope with the intended load. People, tools and materials need to be considered together.

Match the machine to indoor or outdoor use

Halls, sensitive floors and outdoor work need different characteristics. Power source, emissions, wheels, weight and setup space must suit the job. An electric platform is not automatically suitable for every indoor space or floor.

Ground, slope, steps and supporting surfaces are assessed before use. A narrow entrance does not establish suitability of the entire route. The firm needs visible conditions, rather than a customer certification of bearing capacity.

Near traffic routes, in ongoing operations or beside other equipment, segregation and sequence require coordination. Weather and model-specific limits can affect use. Clarify these conditions with the responsible specialists.

Describe access, transport and floors

Gates, doors, overhead clearance, bends and the route to the working position influence selection. Known passage dimensions help. For work inside a building, identify the exact floors and how the machine is intended to reach them.

Truck-mounted, trailer-mounted and separately transported machines have different transport conditions. Customer collection requires suitable transport and any necessary driving entitlement. Vehicle and route suitability are checked with the rental provider.

Agree delivery, collection, positioning and waiting as specific services. A daily rate does not automatically include both transport legs. Clarify the handover point and arrangements if plans change.

Arrange operation, instruction and return

For occupational use, operators require training appropriate to the equipment category. A short model introduction does not replace that training. The actual model and specific site conditions also need to be understood.

Clarify who operates and arranges instruction and local preparation before work. Even with an operator, the actual trade tasks and responsibilities remain to be defined. The initial enquiry is not an authorisation to operate.

Record condition at handover and clarify return, cleaning, power or refuelling and damage reporting. Insurance coverage and excess are contract conditions; insurance does not automatically mean every loss is covered without a customer contribution.

Distinguish the hire rate from complete job costs

Machine type, reachable area, duration and operator service influence pricing. Check whether calendar or working days are charged and what minimum period applies. A weekly rate is not automatically seven times the daily figure.

A regional Bernese Oberland example in a 2026 price list gives CHF 220 per calendar day for an electric scissor platform with a 13.86 m working height on a one-day hire, excluding VAT and transport. This is a specific machine rate, not a Swiss average or complete operator-inclusive price; configuration, availability and other conditions need confirmation.

Transport, energy, cleaning, accessories, insurance or extra hours may require separate clarification. Compare equivalent machines or usable working envelopes, periods and services. A lower base rate may produce a different total with other transport or additional terms.

Useful information for an enquiry

Unknown technical details may remain open. Known dimensions and differences can be described together.

  • Task. Describe the work and operator service wanted.
  • Area. Give known working height, sideways obstacles and material needs.
  • Count. State the exact number of platforms required.
  • Site. Give indoor or outdoor setting, floors and visible access obstacles.
  • Period. State hire duration, preferred start and transport requirements where known.

From the task to a suitable hire quote

Model selection is checked against the job. Catalogue figures guarantee neither availability nor suitable positioning.

  1. Describe the need. Summarise task, count, height, access and period.
  2. Select equipment. Clarify reach, load, ground and transport with the firm.
  3. Compare quotes. Compare machine hire, logistics, operation and additional terms.
  4. Prepare use. Coordinate availability, qualified operation, instruction and handover.
  5. Arrange return. Agree end of hire, collection, condition and cleaning.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to choose a model already?

No. Describe the task, known height, sideways obstacles and access. The firm can develop a suitable selection.

Is maximum working height enough?

No. Horizontal reach, load, setup space, weight and access also need to suit the job. Capacities are checked together for the actual machine.

Does hire include an operator?

Not automatically. Operator-inclusive hire and machine-only hire are different services. Undertaking the actual trade work also needs separate agreement.

Does instruction replace training?

No. Training for the equipment category and instruction on the model and site serve different purposes. Clarify them before occupational use.

What should I compare besides the daily rate?

Period, minimum duration, transport, operator, energy, accessories, cleaning and insurance can matter. Compare the same usable working area and services.
